Finding events to do as a family can pose challenging when you have a seven and seventeen year old. The age gap creates obvious different tastes. So when we saw Top Golf was opening near our home we were eager to check it out.
A state of the art three story golf driving range with microchips in the balls to track distance and accuracy, along with a full restaurant and bar, make it the perfect place for an adult day out or family outing.
Arriving on a Friday afternoon we discovered the place was packed, the ample parking lot full. As luck would have it, we somehow managed a spot up front and lugged our clubs inside, soon discovering Top Golf provides Calloway golf clubs to all golfers so no need to bring your own or pay extra to rent.
Upon entering we were greeted by three smiling young girls hoola hooping and the aroma of beer on tap and garlic fries. The front lobby was full of patrons waiting in two separate lines, eager to get on the range. To our left was the bar, with sports playing on at least five TVs, the Friday happy hour vibe was flowing.
While waiting in the guest services line my seven year old snuck up a set of stairs leading to the kid’s room that had a few tween boys playing Wii golf of course!
Now at the front of the line, we were given a brief synopsis of how Top Golf works. Each player requires a player’s card, which costs a onetime fee of five dollars per card. We were then directed to a second line to reserve our golfing bay. The top two levels had a wait so we opted for the bottom floor. A friendly young man escorted us through a small billiards area and outside to the bottom floor. The long row of bays filled, each with speakers overhead playing mostly country music, as well as misters with fans to cool off the warm air. Each bay was spacious with a large standing table and seats for six. In front of the table was a red line separating the golfer from the rest of the players. A motion activated ball dispenser was next to the tee and a kiosk to the left hosting eight different golf game options. There are five flagged targets on the green for gaming purposes.
After getting kiosk instructions as well as safety rules you then must slide your credit card at the kiosk to begin play. The Top Golf location we were at charges anywhere from 25-45 dollars per hour depending on the time of day for up to six golfers. Shortly after getting our game underway a waitress came by to get our drink order and let us know she would be taking care of our needs while at the bay.
I have only golfed a handful of times and took a class once in college that I skipped more often than not, as it was at 8am. Therefore, I was a tad nervous about swinging the club in fear that I would not move the ball. While reminding myself over and over in my head to keep my eye on the ball, I was pleasantly relieved when the ball did take flight. It wasn’t straight, but it was also not still on the tee, which was good enough for me.
As we took our turns swinging and munching on nachos, I couldn’t help but notice to impressive vibe of Top Golf. While there is not currently a Top Golf in Southern California, the company has been working on opening a facility in El Segundo CA. With over 25 locations across the US, this company started by two friends who wanted more from a driving range experience is sure to entertain golfers and non-golfers alike.
